Botox
One of the most popular and effective nonsurgical solutions available worldwide to reverse signs of aging works just as well for men as it does for women. So why should she be the only one who gets to fib about her age? Botox is a fine line and wrinkles treatment that works by relaxing muscle contractions in the face that can lead to those wrinkles over time. As with any treatment you are considering for your face – the most visible part of you – it’s wise to trust your face to a board certified facial plastic surgeon. Though Botox is widely available and offered by many types of providers, facial plastic surgeons are highly qualified experts that use Botox as one of their many tools to help you limit the buildup of these signs of aging while preserving your face’s natural movements and appearance.
Botox may be used to treat many more areas than you realize, including:
- Crow’s feet
- Glabellar lines
- Forehead wrinkles
Rest assured, Botox has a long proven track record and safety profile. It has been FDA approved for cosmetic treatment since 2002. A typical Botox procedure takes just a few minutes and uses a series of very fine injections into the target areas. It has minimal downtime, so it can help you discretely roll back the clock to give you a boost in self-confidence.
Dermal Fillers & Facial Fat Transfer
Cumulative exposure to the sun, genetics as well as the natural aging process can all cause the skin to wrinkle and sag and the healthy fat in the face to thin. Children and young adults have smooth, round faces due to fatty tissue that is evenly distributed throughout the contours of the face. As you age, the skin sags and fits more loosely. These folds become prominent, especially around the chin, jawline and along the neck.
Dermal fillers are naturally derived compounds, whereas fat transfers utilize your own fat tissue, and each can be used to restore the loss of volume that comes with the age. Some can also treat depressed scars that result from trauma, surgery or acne. There are many dermal fillers and various indications exist for their use, either alone or in combination with one another. Men often choose dermal fillers to address forehead or brow wrinkles, while fat transfer can be a good option restore volume in the mid-to-lower face. Fillers are often used in conjunction with other rejuvenation procedures to achieve an ultimately more polished and natural look.
The procedure to administer dermal fillers is convenient, more affordable and involves little downtime compared with surgery. When administered by a board certified facial plastic surgeon, with advanced training in facial anatomy, function and aesthetic, these FDA approved fillers can help you achieve a more rested and younger appearance. Dr. Robert DeFatta can guide you through the pros and cons of dermal fillers and whether they could be considered to meet your specific goal and correct your areas of concern.
Common dermal fillers used in the face and related structures include:
Fat injection procedures may be performed in our office or outpatient surgery setting and typically take about an hour to complete on their own. Local anesthesia is used both on the donor site (usually abdomen or thigh) and the site where the fat is placed. Some patients may wish to have sedation. The fat is then removed using a syringe, cannula and suction device, prepared, and injected with a cannula into the recipient site. Fat transfer techniques carry a very favorable long-term efficacy profile and studies have demonstrated 75 percent fat retention at the recipient site at five years. This is in contrast to most man-made dermal fillers that must be touched up every few months. However, because the fat used for fat transfers is your own, it is susceptible to weight loss or gain, just like any other fat pockets in your body. General body weight fluctuation can affect the transferred fat appearance as well.

Facelift
As you age, the skin thins, sags and fits more loosely. This process is further accentuated by the loss of facial fat volume in the cheeks, around the nose, mouth and jowls. These folds become prominent, especially around the chin, the jawline and along the neck and can make you appear older than you want or feel.
To help with some of these signs associated with an aging face, Dr. DeFatta performs facelift procedures. Depending on the needs of the patient, these can be combined with a neck lift to enhance your appearance and correct these conditions. A facelift involves tightening of the facial and neck muscles as well as the removal of any excess skin. This procedure can be performed in conjunction with additional cosmetic surgeries such as blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), forehead lift, chin augmentation, liposuction and/or rhinoplasty (nasal surgery). They can also be performed any time after signs of aging appear in order to slow down the appearance of aging, and in many cases, restore a younger appearance.
Before Surgery
Dr. DeFatta will discuss with you the changes that you would like to see related to your jowls and neck, and also discuss the way they can look in relation to your other facial features. Digital photographs and computer imaging allow Dr. DeFatta to evaluate and consult with you regarding the appropriate procedure to achieve your desired results. His objective is to create a natural appearance that is more polished and pleasing to you.
Method of Surgery
These procedures are typically performed under general anesthesia. Incisions are made to hide inside the hairline at the temple, running in front of the ear then around the earlobe and behind the ear, ending in the hair of the scalp. The loose skin is separated, and excess skin is removed using the technique determined to be most appropriate for your particular needs as determined in your pre-surgical consultation. Sagging muscles and connective tissues are tightened in many cases as well. Small sutures are used to close the incisions.
What to Expect
Bandages are applied to the area of surgery and are removed within one to three days. Pain is moderate and controlled with oral medications prescribed by Dr. DeFatta. Your sutures are removed within about a week. In order to minimize scarring, you may be recommended a scar cream to use during healing after the sutures are removed. When present, swelling and discoloration will fade over the following weeks. Tightness in your face will be present for several weeks, and slight changes in your hair pattern may occur around the incision but are often temporary. It is recommended that you avoid sun exposure for several weeks after surgery, so elective timing of the procedure is important. Additionally, medical quality sunscreen may be recommended for use after surgery regardless of time of year. Healing is gradual so you will not experience final results for up to six months after the procedure, and Dr. DeFatta will closely follow up on your progress. In most cases, a single procedure achieves the desired results and most patients who have had face and neck lifts are pleased with their new, more youthful appearance.
