Eyes
The eyes are not only the windows to our souls, but also to our fatigue levels, moods and ages. Sagging and drooping eyelids and eyebrows can accentuate our tired-look and can make us look older than we really feel. This is where Dr. Robert DeFatta can help. Eyelid or brow surgery (blepharoplasty or brow lift) are plastic surgical procedures designed to improve the message our eyes send to the world.
Upper & Lower Eyelid
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is one option to restore a more youthful appearance to your eyes by correcting droopiness and wrinkling of the upper eyelids along with puffy under eye bags. It may involve the upper lids, the lower lids, or both and may be an option for men with signs of aging in and around the eyes.
Before Surgery
Dr. DeFatta will discuss with you the changes you would like to see related to your eyes and also discuss the way the changes can look in relation to your other facial features. Digital photographs and computer imaging allow Dr. DeFatta to evaluate and consult with you regarding the appropriate procedure to achieve the desired results. In some cases, partnering eyelid surgery with other regional procedures of the brow and cheeks can help you achieve a more youthful overall appearance. During your consultation with Dr. DeFatta, various options will be discussed, and a customized plan will be tailored to help you achieve the look you desire.
Method of Surgery
Depending on the extent of the procedure, eyelid surgery may be performed in a surgeon’s office based facility, an outpatient surgery center or a hospital. It typically takes one to two hours to complete and various types of anesthesia can be recommended (local, IV with sedation or general) depending on whether it will be combined with other cosmetic procedures. Regardless of the type of anesthesia, we will ensure you are comfortable and relaxed during the procedure.
Incisions are discreet and can often be placed in the natural skin crease of the upper and/or inside of the lower eyelid. Through these incisions, excess fat can be removed, and sagging skin and muscle can be trimmed based on what is needed to achieve the desired result. Often, partnering eyelid surgery with other regional procedures of the brow and cheeks can help you achieve a more youthful overall appearance. These might include chemical peels, fat transfers and/or brow lift.
What to Expect
Swelling and bruising of the eyelids and around the eyes in the days following the surgery are common and should begin to subside after the first day. Some blurring of your vision may also occur and is normal, especially if you are asked to use topical ointment on your incisions. Dissolvable sutures are placed for your comfort. Dr. DeFatta will counsel you when you may begin wearing makeup to help conceal these changes during the normal healing period. In most cases, you can resume normal activity by about two weeks. It may take about six months for the scars to lose their redness.
