Ears
Protruding ears can be the cause of teasing and can lead to various negative behavioral and psychologic outcomes. They can lead to a feeling of insecurity and may even negatively affect academic performance. Before Surgery
Dr. Robert will discuss with you the changes you would like to see related to the ears, and also the way the changes can look in relation to your other facial features. Digital photographs and computer imaging allow Dr. DeFatta to evaluate and consult with you regarding the appropriate procedure to achieve the desired results.
Method of Surgery
The procedure can be performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the age of the patient. The procedure typically takes approximately one hour. Dr. DeFatta has options that might include folding, reshaping or suturing the ear cartilage or removing excess cartilage. In the majority of cases, incisions can be hidden on the back of the ear to minimize visibility and protect from sun and element exposure during healing. Sutures are placed and bandages may be applied to speed up the healing process.
What to Expect
After the procedure, bruising around the ears is common and usually fades in two to three weeks. Temporary numbness is also common and is to be expected for up to several days. Pain associated with otoplasty is minimal and can be treated with over-the-counter oral medication such as Tylenol. Refraining from sleeping on the ears is required. Sleeping in an elevated position and on a very soft pillow is advised. Showering and shampooing may begin after dressing is removed, if any. An elastic headband to support the ears may be recommended to be used nightly for one month after surgery. Most patients can return to normal activity about two weeks following the procedure. Consult with Dr. DeFatta regarding any atypical work or activity requirement that might place your head and ears at risk for direct trauma after the procedure.
