Chin Augmentation (mentoplasty)
If you feel your chin is too small or out of proportion with other facial features, a chin implant can help. Dr. DeFatta can improve the size, shape and contours of your chin using an FDA-approved implant that can be customized to bring your chin in harmony with your other facial features and help you achieve a more masculine aesthetic.
Before Surgery
Dr. Robert DeFatta will discuss what you are looking to achieve with this procedure and whether this procedure can help bring balance to your face. Men who have a weak, recessed or even double chin are good candidates for this procedure. Dr. DeFatta will take the time to discuss the ways in which this change can appear in relation to your other facial features. Digital photographs and computer imaging will help you visualize how you will look after this procedure. These techniques can also help you see how this procedure can be combined with other procedures, such as rhinoplasty, cheek augmentation or a facelift. During your consultation process with Dr. DeFatta, these options can be discussed and a custom plan can be tailored to help you achieve the look you desire.
Method of Surgery
Dr. DeFatta performs chin augmentation as an outpatient procedure so you can return home the same day to start the recovery process. The procedure takes approximately an hour to perform. However, if combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures, the overall surgery time may be longer. Dr. DeFatta uses a small incision under the chin to insert an implant during the procedure. The incision is virtually invisible and provides Dr. DeFatta with the view he needs to ensure an optimal result.
What to Expect
A patient usually experiences swelling and bruising following this surgery, which disappears on its own within a few weeks. It usually takes a few weeks to months for all of the swelling to subside and the final result to be seen.
Immediately following chin augmentation surgery, a secure dressing will be applied and worn for about three to five days. Recovery often requires a patient to keep their head elevated as much as possible, even while sleeping. It generally takes about seven to 10 days for the incision to heal. At three weeks, the patient can usually return to normal activities. However, any activity that can jar or bump the face must be postponed for about six weeks. Some patients receive medication to help accelerate the healing process. Any medication should be taken as prescribed.
Dr. DeFatta will provide post-operative instructions for a patient to follow during their recovery. The instructions will explain how a patient can care for the surgical site and describe any medications that should be taken during the recovery period. He will also follow your progress throughout the recovery period, to make the experience as easy as possible. He performs periodic evaluations to ensure a full and speedy recovery while avoiding post-treatment complications. Dr. DeFatta is always available to respond to a patient’s questions during the recovery period.
