Cheek Fat Pad Removal
Some individuals have full or chubby cheeks, which can be due to either genetics or weight gain. In an attempt to refine a person’s appearance, the cheeks can be contoured. The patient will regain symmetry in their midface by allowing it to gently transition with the surrounding facial structures of the upper and lower face. By restoring a more balanced, youthful appearance, Dr. DeFatta can restore a person’s self-confidence.
Before Surgery
Dr. DeFatta will discuss what you are looking to achieve with this procedure and whether this procedure can help you achieve facial harmony. He will explain how buccal fat pad reduction can result in a more balanced, youthful facial appearance. He will take the time to discuss the ways in which this change can look in relation to your other facial features. Digital photographs and computer imaging will help you visualize how you will look after this procedure. These techniques can also help you see how this surgery can be combined with other procedures. During your consultation process with Dr. DeFatta, these options can be discussed, and a custom plan can be tailored to help you achieve the look you desire.
Method of Surgery
Dr. DeFatta performs buccal fat pad removal as an outpatient procedure so you can return home the same day to start the recovery process. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes to perform. However, if combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures, the overall surgery time will increase. Dr. DeFatta approaches the buccal fat pad through the mouth. The goal of this approach is to obtain a more sculpted, natural-looking facial appearance without any visible scars.
What to Expect
Patients usually experiences facial swelling following this surgery, which disappears on its own within two to three weeks. When the swelling starts to go away, the cheeks will begin looking thinner and more contoured. It usually takes a few months for all of the swelling to subside and the final result to be seen.
It generally takes seven days for the mouth incisions to heal. For the first few days following surgery, a patient may want to follow a soft or semi-liquid diet. Dr. DeFatta prescribes a special mouth rinse following surgery to prevent an infection. Some patients receive medication to help accelerate the healing process. Any medication should be taken as prescribed.
Dr. DeFatta will provide post-operative instructions for you to follow during your recovery. The instructions will explain how you should care for the surgical site and list out any medications that should be taken during the recovery period.
Dr. DeFatta will follow your progress throughout the recovery period to make the experience as easy as possible. He performs periodic evaluations to ensure a full and speedy recovery while avoiding post-treatment complications. Dr. DeFatta is always available to respond to your questions during the recovery period.
