Brows

While traditionally brow lift procedures are used to correct the appearance of older, drooping eyebrows and hooding over the eyes, in cases of gender affirmation, this time-tested procedure can be used to lift and arch the brow into a more feminine position and shape. In younger patients with an already higher brow position, Botox may be used to selectively elevate the brows a few millimeters in the outer portion to give them a more feminine shape. However, in some patients, Botox is not sufficient for the desired results and a surgical procedure may be considered. Elevation and arching of the brows can help open up the eyes and give them a much more feminine and youthful appearance.

Before Surgery

Dr. DeFatta will discuss with you the changes you would like to see related to your forehead, brows and eyes, and also discuss the ways in which the changes can look in relation to your other facial features. Digital photographs and computer imaging allow Dr. DeFatta to evaluate and consult with you regarding the appropriate procedure or combination of procedures to achieve the desired results. Method of Surgery

Brow lifts can be performed either on an outpatient basis, but in some cases, an overnight observation stay may be required. The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia.  In most cases, Dr. DeFatta prefers to use an endoscopic-assisted approach where the incisions can be hidden within the scalp to minimize visible scaring and accelerate the healing process. The deep tissues of the forehead and brows are lifted and repositioned to a more elevated location and arched shape. 

What to Expect

Swelling is common and can last up to two weeks after the procedure. To help with this, a light pressure dressing is placed at the end of surgery and Dr. DeFatta will counsel you on how and when to remove it. Numbness around the sites of incisions can occur as well, but typically is only temporarily. Sutures may remain in place up to 10 days, especially if placed in the scalp.  Hair washing can be resumed after 24-48 hours, and in most cases, you can resume normal activity by about two weeks. Once the healing process is underway, you should expect to notice results in four to six weeks after the procedure.
